[comp.sys.amiga.programmer] Recommendations for SAS C

uskmg@mathcs.emory.edu (Ken Guyton {EUCC}) (04/03/91)

I am interested in getting a C compiler for my old Amiga 1000 (1/2-Mb,
dual drive, no hard disk). I have read quite a few comments and bug
discussions about SAS C and the old Lattice and Manx compilers here
and in other places.

I would like a compiler with a good source level debugger and make
utility. Also I would like to have the choice of ANSI C. I don't
expect to do serious large project development at the present time but
would expect to write utility programs and also some scientific (i.e.,
reliable floating-point support) programming.

* Is Manx still around or is SAS the default these days? Are there
any other options? (I know there were early PD compilers but have
read that getting them up and running is much trouble and I need
floating-point). I believe I have read that GCC is LARGE.

* Does SAS have a make utility?

* What is the difference between the Professional and Developer's
versions?

* Will SAS C run on my 512K floppy 1000?

* How is the documentation and support? I have been impressed with
SAS's documentation and support of their statistical software which we
support on a number of platforms.

* How much does it cost and where is the best place to buy it? Is
there an educational discount?

Any comments will be appreciated.

(A little extra background: At work I have access to a Sun 4/490 and a
NeXTstation on my desk. On the Amiga at home I have the first version
of the TDI Modula-2 compiler).
