[comp.sys.amiga.programmer] req.library & fork

specter@disk.uucp (Byron Max Guernsey) (05/25/91)

I need some information on the functions in req.library. If someone could please
send me the docs for that library in mail I would probably buy them an amiga
3000. (fingers crossed). I have the library..just don't know how to call it
since it was included in some package. Also, what is the status of the req.
library? Is it PD? Shareware? I have seen commercial programs that use it and
distribute it (for example CED professional). I would like to do the same since
it is about the nicest file requester I have seen as of yet.

Also, I have a question about rerouting I/O to the serial port. I want to do
something similar to the program serial server where the user can open a remote
CLI or I can pop up a CLI program that does I/O from the serial port. I would
really prefer not to write my own console handler as in serserver. I was looking
through our lattice headers at work and noticed that there is a FORKENV
structure that has BPTR pointer to std_in and std_out...could this be used to
change stdio to the serial device some how? If not I guess I will try to
emulate a pipe through ram files (ERG).

Finally, one last question, I should just go try this myself instead of asking
here, but since I have already entered a message I will include this. I want
to share some memory with several tasks. I am a unix programmer by heart and
am used to just using shmem calls. What will happen if I start a program, fork()
out and then modify a variable in the forked process, will that point to the
same location as in the parent? (so essentially they will share those variables?
)

Thanks in advanced to all who reply, and to the dude that told me c.s.a.tech was
moved :)
