There is only one HST only modem produced by US Robotics right now, that is the HST 14.4MNP/V.42/V.42bis, this modem is compatibly with the older versions of the HST which had a 9600 max speed and a slower 300 baud back channel, there are also older versions of the 14.4 that only have MNP and no V.42. US Robotics also makes a high speed modem that meets the V.32 standard for 9600bps full duplex Synchrouns/Ansynchrouns communications, however the PP&S and Intel V.32 modems are selling for less $$$. Finally US Robotics makes the Dual Standard which has all the capabilities of the HST 14.4 and the V.32 modem in the same modem (what I have). One thing, the HST modems only are able to transmit at 14.4K in one direction at a time (V.32 modems which are 9600 are able to do 9600 in both directions at the same time). I mention this due to the fact that when using a HST modem for transfers with protocols that send ACKs back (such as UUCP, Kermit, Xmodem, Ymodem excpet Ymodem G) do not go that fast since the ACKs go back over the back channel at either 300 or 450 baud. End result is the HST gives very fast transfers with streaming protocols like Zmodem and YmodemG (1650cps is not unusual) but does worse on non streaming protocols (UUCP-G transfers are not much faster than a cheap 2400V.42bis modem, 350cps) The HST is a great modem if you do a lot of BBSing due to it's high popularity and the fact that it will give great Zmodem transfer speeds. However, it is a poor investment if you plan on doing UUCP, Kermit or Xmodem connects or for interactive work.
