[comp.sys.amiga.misc] Amiga seen!

sk2x+@andrew.cmu.edu (Sun Kun Kim) (01/31/91)

I don't know how many of you have been watching the CNN and other TV
stations for the coverage of the Gulf War but this is very exciting! I
just found out that that the US Department of Defense is using the
Amigas for their missle guidance systems. I was watching CNN and they
were showing one of those videos that was shot by the Tomahawk cruise
missles and when the missle hit the target, just before everything went
white, I saw the infamous Guru meditation error!! It was kinda fuzzy
but there is no doubt in my mind what that was.

Now I know WHY Commodore stock has been going up and their earning is
triple the amount from last year!

No, it means that either CNN or the DoD is using an Amiga to overlay
captions on the videos. Sorry for the letdown. - kevin

Good thing it didn't Guru BEFORE the missle hit. Somehow I think that its
not directly related to the guidance system though, probably just in doing
the video.

Has anyone considered that they were using an Amiga for the editing of the
video tape? I find it almost totally incomcievable that they would use
amiga computers to control million dollar missles.... I believe it much
more likely that they were using the Amiga as a video titiling computer
or something of the like.... (My personal favorite is the "Luckiest man
in Iraq")

Guys(and Gals, if there are any subscribed to this bboard),

I was kidding about the missle thing. I thought the smiley faces would
be a give away for a joke but I've been getting some e-mails and people
think that I was serious.

Well, if this message disappoints you, I am sorry. The US DoD don't
use Amigas for missle guidance systems. I just want to clarify this
before people actually believe what I posted.

Sorry for any excitement this might have caused... and if you got a
kick out of it and thought it was really funny, then I am happy for you.

Don't discount the fact that low cost processors control vehicles
that cost >1 million. The early shuttles had 6502 equivalent procesors
controlling the hardware. And HP-41 were used as data collection
terminals.

I always thought that the military was one of the largest purchasers
of Motorola chips. Perhaps someone in the military/space programs
would care to comment.

Maybe someone from NewTek could check the registered user list :-)

Well, I don't work for DoD, but I doubt anybody from DoD would be able to give
you an answer based on anything more than heresay. The entire federal
government (including DoD) does not consume more of our chips then some of
our larger customers. That isn't saying that the Fed isn't in the top ten,
just that we do have significantly larger customers.

Yeah, no kidding. A friend commented to me last night that all these
"proud" Amiga sightings made him think of a fantasy Ford Pinto club:

"Hey, I spotted another Pinto on the news last night! Someone hit it in
the rear and it had blown up! Ain't that great publicity for us??"

<grimace>

But I have a "solution"... instead of a Guru meditation notice, Amigas
should display a picture of a Mac or PC screen with "ERROR!" on it ;-).

ever think that because you can't tell it's an amiga (and not a $50K machine)
doing graphics until a GURU screen shows up means that the amiga is on par
with such machines?

The problem is: When Mac's and PC's crash, you most often don't SEE anything at
all - The machine just is useless. I like the fact that the Amiga TELLS you
that it's having problems.

I spotted another AMIGA last night on the TV show 'Davis Rules'! The
secratary of the school carried an Amiga 500 under her arm as she walked
across the hall and told the pricipal that all the teachers hate him!

               (true story)
It is a network TV show, but I don't know which one.

Actually, I wish our local Cable company would start using Amiga's - All too often
I saw the 'Re-Starting' on the screen after the ever constant crashing they
do. I find Amiga's more reliable (My development A3000 (And I'm not all
that good of a developer) crashes less often than this thing does ;-)
