[comp.sys.amiga.misc] HELP! Diskette beyond repair

dsheythe@milton.u.washington.edu (Donald Sheythe) (02/24/91)

Amydos has corrupted yet another one of my disks.... :-(

It always seems to clobber the disk structure when the disk gets too full.

I'd run Disksalv on the disk, but whenever I stick it in the drive, the
trackdisk crashes and a "disk corrupt - task held" requester comes up.

I get an 8700000B guru when I select cancel.

Help! What can I do to save my disk?

Hooray! I'm saved!

FixDisk1.2 was able to load the corrupted disk w/o the
dreaded crash.

I had some trouble with FixDisk's validation process though, and the
program hung. However, I was able to bypass the validation and just
copied the files onto another disk.

Is it actually trackdisk crashing, or DOS? That's an imprortant distinction.
DiskSalv normally shuts off DOS by the time its at the "Hit RETURN..."
prompt (assuming you haven't specified the NODOS option). So if DOS is the
one with the problem, you can fire up DiskSalv, THEN put the disk in. If
it's actually trackdisk that's crashing, a much less likely case, there's not
much you can do about it, since DiskSalv relies on trackdisk.device.

Sez here that's a KEY OUT OF RANGE guru, brought to you by your friendly
neighborhood DOS subsystem. So if you type your "DiskSalv df0: whatever:",
wait for the prompt, put the disk in, and type RETURN, you should be on your
way. Just don't restore to RAM:, since DOS will probably go for the disk
after DiskSalv is done with it, once again bringing down a guru on your head.
