[comp.sys.amiga.misc] Please explain comp.* vs. alt.*

peterk@cbmger.UUCP (Peter Kittel GERMANY) (02/27/91)

As someone relatively new to the net, could some kind soul please
explain some net terms to me? E.g. I now found a group alt.sources.amiga
where there also exists a comp.sys.amiga.sources (if I'm not in error).
Q: What's the difference?????
As far as I understand, the rec.* groups mean "recreation".
Is there a file explaining these general terms that someone might mail
to me?
Thanks in advance.

Someone's in error. There shouldn't be "comp.sys.amiga.sources". However,
there should be "comp.sources.amiga". The difference between
comp.sources.amiga and alt.sources.amiga is that the comp.sources.amiga
group is moderated. You have to send your files to someone who will post
them for you and also put them in the archives. Alt.sources.amiga is
un-moderated, you can just post whatever you want.

"Alt" stands for "Alternative" and you can basically create any group you
want that starts with "alt" without having a formal vote about it. Some
sites refuse to have alt groups, because they create a lot of traffic and
some of them are very controversial.
