Hrmmphh! The latest Amiga World cover sports a blurb claiming you can win an A3000. The blurb says to check out the ad on page 81, but on page 81, all I found was an ad for the Amiga World Tool Chest. In fact, I couldn't find anything in the entire magazine about this contest. *sigh* Psyched out...

Look again, page 81 is devoted entirely to the A3000 sweepstakes; it has the instructions and the puzzle board. The ad for the Amiga World Tool Chest is on page 107. BTW, this is the April issue. I noticed this last month and was a little mad (apparently subscribers to Amiga World aren't worth as much to IDG as people who buy issues off the newsstand). Anyway, this month's issue, they screwed up and put the announcement for the contest on the subscribers issue's cover. I think the subscribers should let Amiga World know how they feel about being effectively (unless you want to buy an extra issue of the magazine from the newsstand) shut out of the contest. -Todd Allendorf toddal@cobalt.cco.caltech.edu

Hmmm^2 Well, not in my issue anyway, nor my friend's. Do you receive yours
via subscription, or newstand? Page 81 in our issues are Amiga World Tool

My copy of amiga world had no such sweepstakes. I did find that page in an amiga world on a shelf in a super-market. I guess they don't care for you to participate if you subscribe! Jeff jra1@ra.msstate.edu

anywhere in the issue. The issue is from a subscription. Someone f___ed up there.

Aha! There seems to be a pattern here. According to admittedly small sample size so far, the subscribers to Amiga World did not receive any info about the contest to win an A3000. This I feel, is a rather cheesy move on Amiga World's part... like, they already have our money, so no need to hang bait in front of our noses. If you are a subscriber who received one of these bogus contest issues (or if you are a subscriber and received a valid contest issue) I'd like to hear from you (via email is probably best). If there is enough interest and support, I'd like to fire off a letter to them in protest. Heh, maybe while we're at it, we could also make mention of Montgomery Grant's sterling net.reputation here. :-) -baron -- // uhccux amiga archive | amiga@uhccux.uhcc.hawaii.edu | amiga@uhccux.bitnet \X/ "just another peon" | baron@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu | baron@uhccux.bitnet

Well, there's obviously more than one version of the April issue of Amiga World out there. Mine has the Toolchest ad on pg 81 and no mention anywhere of the contest (except the blurb on the front cover). I get mine through subscription, could the newstand copy be different?
mikep@hpmwtd.HP.COM (Mike Powell) (03/21/91)
I didn't even know that the newsstand and subscriber's even had different issues? Essentially, this means that there are TWO Amiga Worlds.... (more ?) I thought I was getting a subscription to the magazine I bought on the newsstand... but apparently, they sold me something else! This sounds like unethical busines practices to me.... Time to cancel my subscription.... -Mike-

Aha! I looked at my subscription. It had the cover announcing the contest, but no contest inside. I looked at a newsrack copy. It had the contest, but no mention of it on the cover. Time to cancel my subscription.... It's my understanding that there is no difference in the editorial content between the newsstand and subscription versions of AmigaWorld. The difference is only in circulation department advertising. Lou Wallace (senior editor, technology), indicated on CompuServe, that since this was a circulation department contest, even he was unaware of it. I do believe that it is a common magazine business practice to target advertising to specific markets, which, in turn, can lead to separate editions of a magazine, all having the same editorial content.
