[comp.sys.amiga.misc] AB20 archive changes

slmvk@cc.usu.edu (04/02/91)

Ok, this is for all of U out there who FTP on ab20.larc.nasa.gov.
If you've been on since march 26, you've probably seen that stuff is FINALLY
moving from the /incoming/amiga dir to the regular amiga dir. This is my
doing. Tad got me to clean up the system for him (it was 99% full when I
started |->), and I'll be doing that for a while. If any of U have any
suggestions, comments, flames, etc. about this, send them to SLMVK@cc.usu.edu.
Feedback is appreciated.

Re: Cleanup of abcfd20.larc.nasa.gov

No Flames other than the fact that I was getting quite used to a permanent
incoming dir. :)

Now I don't know if I'll be able to find anything.

Here is an idea --- How about a recent uploads list? Keep a list of
new files uploaded for 7 days. Then archive the file lists in a
directory. Simple direct and HIGHLY USEFUL.

This would also keep down BITFTP people grabbing the whole FILES.Z
for new files as often.

How about an even better idea - since ab20 is more or less the main
Amiga archive site, how about a weekly posting in comp.sys.amiga.announce
of 'recent additions to the archive' (just like is done for wsmr-simtel20
in comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d). This would avoid a lot of needless ftp'ing
just to see what's new (plus the posted listing could include
brief descriptions). Sure would make life easier (plus it'd cut down
on my ftp bill:-)

I agree completely. I look up AB20 almost every day (or at least every second
day). I go through the usual get FILES.Z...cat FILES.Z |grep etc... routine
every time. A little summary here would be very helpful.

BTW. The new archive changes are good too. (Instead of typing NoiseTracker-
Modules, I just type st-nt, much easier).

Jokes aside (gee, was that a joke?), AB20 is the only archive I use regularly,
and a listing here would be a good idea.

Yes, but will that cranky, uncooperative moderator go along with it?

I'll consider it, but I think something like this needs some
discussion. Here are some things:

1. Who's going to make up the list? Tad? He's awfully busy already.
I'm certainly not going to do it.

2. Exactly what information should go on the list? I'm not going to
post a list of file names with no descriptions.

3. Where will the extra information come from? The uploaders? Tad?
   Someone else?

4. Is comp.sys.amiga.announce the best group for this? Would another
   one be more appropriate?

5. Is it a good idea in the first place? With the current system,
there is only a transmission when someone is really going to look
to see what's there. On Usenet, the thing will get broadcast all
over the place no matter what.

6. Right now, I will put up an announcement of your upload if you
wrote whatever you uploaded. Could this policy be extended or
   changed in some manner?

7. What am I forgetting? It's always something.
