[comp.sys.amiga.misc] commodore stock

es1@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu (Ethan Solomita) (04/04/91)

As of 1:03 today (4/3/91) Commodore stock is at 19 7/8,
on its way to breaking the high of appr 20 it achieved 1 1/2
years ago. If I can find any more detail as to why it is jumping,
I'll post. I can only assume there are great sales expectations.

There is a rumor (I believe it was even mentioned in Amiga World)
that Sony is considering buying Commodore.

Commodore stock reached about $90 in the early 80's.

Really? In one of the previous message on this discussion regarding
Commodore stock, it has been stated that Commodore stock was released in
1985 and its issued price was $4 per share.

I doubt very much the stock dropped from $90 to $4. I tend to see
the other story as valid; that it was issued at $4, climbed to $19
over a period of 6 years, and is now shooting up with this Amiga
convention (to which I will be leaving in 5 minutes).

The Commodore PET was a popular computer in 1979. Where did you get
this information?

When Pac-Man mania was at it's peak Commodore's stock soared up to
around $140. Numbers like $179 come to mind but that might be the
caffine in me talking. The fact that Commodore's stock dropped to
around $3 and has been weaving between $4 and $12 for the last
2-3 years is the reason why investors have put CBM on the "bad
investment" list for a while.

Of course, in the last 6 months many investors have taking CBM off
that list and one or two have put it on the "buy" list. The people
that purchased stock at $4 must be very happy right now.

Actually, it did go up real high during the early 80s.
Then the stock split again and again and again. Commodore stock
is one of the most volatile stocks on the market that I've seen
going regularly between lows of 5-6 and highs of 20. Exactly one
year ago it was at 20. Exactly six-eight months ago it was at 4.

Commodore's stock was as low as $4 last August (Apple was at about $26).

Good to hear it...I was responding based on a series of messages regarding
this issue. Seems the details are being filled in daily! I look forward
to what happens to the stocks after the Amiga show this past weekend.
Perhaps they will go up 10 points? Will the CDTV create a stir on Wall
Street? We shall see...

A drawback of the stock is that it doesn't pay dividends --- I can't find
them listed as paying dividends in the Journal, and someone I tipped off
to the potential rise in the stock, also found (according to his broker) that
the stock doesn't pay dividends.

Sooo....the stock's been all over, eh? Looks like he'll be in for a roller-
coaster ride!

From the previous messages that have been put on this list. They were sent
to all members of the list. There's a way of getting messages from archives
of the lists. You probably didn't get them, or you would have replied to them,
I'm sure.

So long as they kept them. If they sold them, imprints of their bodies might
be found in the concrete below their office windows.

No, the stock should be many years older. I know personally some
friends who had bought it at ca. $50 in the early 80s.

No big deal. Electronic Arts doesn't pay dividends (and probably
won't, according to their prospectus). Even so, I made a net gain of
$400 in 8 months on an original $800 investment in EA. How do you
think I paid for my 3000? I sold my stock!

The reason Commodore doesn't pay dividends is the right reason not to
pay dividends: they roll money they make back into the company, for
development and such stuff. This sort of thing tends to help stock
prices (but not always).

As an employee of CBM since JULY '82, and an occasional trader of its
stock I can shed some light on this. Soon after I got here CBM stock hit
a high of 90 or so and split 2:1. After this it zoomed to 60 or so, its
peak before it began its decline during the mid 80's. On several
occasions the stock price dipped into single digit range and even
managed to remain there for a while. In case you are curious I bought at
$7 about 2 years back(we won't talk about previous purchases, ok?).

I've personally followed and bought Commodore stock since 1981.
From 1981 to 1984, they had split many times at different ratios.
The last time they split was 1983 or 1984. It went as high as
U$54 +- U$1 and dropped to U$10 quickly (over 1 year). It stabilied
at U$7 for several years afterwards. I actually do have charts
somewhere of the stock prices if people are really interested.
