I tried to post this before, but don't think it ever made it...
A friend of mine is trying to make an alternate (Cyrillic) character
set for the Amiga. He told me that the amiga reads in the appropriate
character set file from the "workbench" disk on bootup. Assuming the Amiga
defines its character sets the same way {almost} every other bit-mapped
computer does, all we need is the format for the data in the file and
whether the characters are column or row-major ordered, and
we can map the characters and put the data in a file.
Unfortunately, none of the local computer-book stores carry any books
which document *anything* about creating your own alternate character
sets on the Amiga...
If anyone knows a source for the information, or can give him the info
