[comp.sys.amiga.misc] Amiga dealers in New York City

pasquali@usage.csd.unsw.oz.au (Anthony Savva) (04/16/91)

Hi all,

I'll be travelling to NYC next week, and staying there a while then going on to
London. I would really find it helpful for someone to point me to the best
and cheapest dealers in town.

I'm particularly looking for an accelerator board ( maybe a GVP or Commodore )
and some cheap games.

Thanx

I can tell you one thing about every dealer in New Yok City...they are
all crooks! Don't buy anything from them! Not even floppy disk labels!
I bought my Amiga 500 NEAR NYC, but not actually in NYC, and they decided
that I didn't need a warranty with my computer, so when I went to verify
my warranty 1 week after purchasing my Amiga 500, they refused to admit
I had ever bought the computer, event though I had a receipt!

AWnd if you happen to go by Penn Station, and on the main floor you
see a nice big electronics store that just so happens to sell Amigas,
DON'T GO IN! It's Montgomery Grant! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I suggest you check out some suburbs. There is a Go Amigo store in
NorthPort, Long Island, which is about 30 minutes from NYC. You can
take the train from NYC Penn Station to Jamaica, then switch to the
Northport line. Ooops, it is called Amigo Business Computers, not Go
Amigo. 192 Laurel Road, East Northport, NY phone:516-757-7334. It should be
near the northern shores of Long Island.

Also try Custom Computer Specialists, 1775 Express Drive North
Hauppauge, NY phone:516-582-6699. I can't find it on my map, so I
am not sure where it is.

That is a sweeping, and stupid, statement. Have you been
to EVERY dealer in NYC? I doubt it. There are four in Manhattan,
and several more in the other boroughs, not to mention NJ,
Westchester and Long Island.
In particular I recommend Leigh's Computer on 83rd and
3rd. Although their prices aren't miraculous, they are (or should
I say Ben Lott is) a good dealer. Just because some dealer rips
you off doesn't mean you should go ranting about them all. Most
ARE problem stores, but all crooks? Some are scum without being
crooks, but Leigh's is very decent.

Q: How many Comp Sci majors does it take to change a lightbulb
A: None. It's a hardware problem.

A caveat:

DO NOT GO TO THE BYTE SHOP, Merrick, Long Island!

They ripped me off for about $600. They did a motherboard and keyboard
swap against my wishes, and refused to return the machine until I paid.

The repairs, it turned out, were unnecessary.

Find another Amiga dealer, just avoid The Byte Shop like the PLAGUE.

If you have disputes such as this with any shop you should do two things.
1) Give C= a call. They do want to make sure that dealers are not ripping
    customers off.
2) Give the Better Business Bureau a call and fill out a complaint against
    the dealer with them.

Is that the one where the guards check to see if people bring in
weapons with them?

I didn't mean to offend anybody. I guess instead of saying every (Amiga)
dealer in NY is a crook, I should have said,

"Every business/store/person in NYC is a crook (except for those that
aren't)."

No. It isn't. In fact it is in a NICE and SAFE
neighborhood on the Upper East Side. It is a small place but the
people are friendly and know what they are talking about, as well
as providing in-house service.
