[comp.sys.amiga.misc] Posting "for sale" messages to .misc is not ok

zerkle@iris.ucdavis.edu (Dan Zerkle) (05/05/91)

Since the rash of wrongly placed posts has not completely dried up, I
would like to re-iterate the earlier point someone made.

If you have a "for sale" notice for some piece of hardware or software
or book or whatever related to the Amiga, it should be posted ONLY to
comp.sys.amiga.marketplace. That's it. Don't crosspost it to another
group. Don't re-post it to another group. Leave the other groups
alone.

The .marketplace group is working very, very well. There are quite a
lot of people lurking there, looking for bargains. I know this
because I have many times responded to offers within hours of their
creation, only to find that I am too late, and it has already been
sold. Everyone who is looking to buy/sell something for the Amiga is
going to look in that group.

The "for sale" notices create clutter in the other news groups. The
.marketplace group was created during the re-organization SPECIFICALLY
to reduce the clutter. When you post your "for sale" notices
elsewhere, you annoy the large amount of people on those groups who
are not interested in your notice. You also pervert the noble purpose
of the reorganization. If you post in .marketplace, you are putting
it somewhere that people who want this sort of thing can find it.

If I want to buy something, I want to be able to find a "for sale" ad.
I don't want to go mucking around all the other groups that I might
not ordinarily read (such as .hardware) to go looking for one. I want
to go straight to .marketplace and get my ad. By putting your ad
there, you are doing a favor to your potential customers.

If you read the general guidelines to Usenet in news.announce.newusers
(you DID read all of those, didn't you?), it is specifically stated
that cross-posting of "for sale" messages is not appreciated. This
applies to .marketplace, too. For more information on the various
Amiga groups, please look at the introductory postings in
comp.sys.amiga.introduction (you read all of those, too, didn't
you?).

In summary:

It is NOT OK to post "for sale" ads for Amiga stuff in any Amiga
newsgroup except comp.sys.amiga.marketplace.

It IS OK to post "for sale" ads for Amiga stuff in
comp.sys.amiga.marketplace.

Why do you think we created .marketplace, anyway? Cripes!
