[comp.sys.amiga.misc] How to connect an Amiga to a VCR

swildner@channelz.gun.de (Sascha Wildner) (05/06/91)

Does anybody know a cheap way to connect an Amiga to VCR? This would enable
me to record my raytraced pictures directly to Video Tape. Do I need a
GenLock?

The cheapest way would be to get an RF modulator, and plug it into the RGB
port on your Amiga. Normally, you hook the other end to a TV, but you could
substitute the VCR, instead. The picture that you end up with won't be
as good as you'd get with even a low-end genlock, but on the other hand
you should be able to get Commodore's RF modulator for $30 US, compared
to about $100 US for the cheapest genlock.

Whew... You didnt know this?

Connect your Amiga to the video in on your VCR, and hit record. Thats simple.

However, if you DONT have an RGB to Composite converter, its a bit tricky. If
youre not using an A520, a C-View Cable, or something, go out and get it.. The
A520 is a lovely little box, made by Commodore, that converts the Amiga's
native RGB signal to a composite signal for viewing on standard TV sets, and
therefore allowing it to be dumped to videotape..

I myself have my 3 Meg A2000 hookedup to an A520, patched through a VCR at all
times, andTHEN displayed on my 21" Toshiba flatscreen TV....Delivers one
helluva picture with almost no interlace flicker.

Gimmie my 21" Toshiba anyday.

What you're looking for (assuming you don't have a 1000 with one
built in) is an encoder. There is an encoder built into each genlock, but
one all by itself is typically cheaper. Depending on how good of quality
you want, you could buy the Commodore A520 (not too good, but cheap), the
DigiFeX VIP (quite good, but more expensive) or the Magni 4004 (Excelent,
true broadcast quality, but very expensive). Any of these will plug in
and give you a standard video signal which you can feed to the VCR. I
think if I were in the market for one, I'd get the DigiFeX VIP... It's
gives the best signal for the least cost, and has a passthrough for your
RGB monitor.
You'll have to ask each company about PAL versions... I've only
played with NTSC.
