[comp.sys.amiga.misc] Can blind people use the Amiga?

briang@sdd.hp.com (Brian Gragg) (05/17/91)

Hi all,
I'm looking for a program that might help me on a project. A friend at
my wifes work is a big amiga fan (had an A1000 for 5 years) but is blind.
In order to better utilize his amiga, he needs audio i/o from it. He
wants to have key presses said and output read from various screens.

I've written an input handler which can satisfy the first part. But the
rest is a big bill for me. I picture being able to swap screens/windows from
the keyboard and having the narrator announce the new screen/window name.
Then, anything going to that window (text) should be said through the
narrator. He has also (on IBM clones) used a sort of virtual cursor
which he can move back over the window and have portions of the screen
re-read. He is a programmer so once the basics are done, he could
  continue to develop/customize it himself.

Anybody have any clues? Is there anything like this around? Any code
samples would be great if nothing exists already. What do you say
Commodore, is this a unique use for an amiga?

This is a non-profit project. We'd like to release it to the world as PD
or whatever if it ever gets done.

  Brian.
