[comp.sys.amiga.misc] Advertising Problems Solved!

plummer@hercules.cs.uregina.ca (Dave Plummer) (06/19/91)

I think I know how to finally solve CBM's advertising woes: if the
Hair Club for Men would buy CBM and share their advertising budget.

Might even solve the problem of so many programmers going bald by 40!

No kidding.... I mentioned before, here... I see more commercials from local
car dealerships in one day, than ive seen out of Commodore in 6 years..

Lets take radio for example, just an example. I believe a few spots on a
Detroit AM station will run you $300...Lets say there is 360 markets that
Commodore will want to advertise on...to do a several local commericals on 360
stations would run $108,000...In a month you could have spent 3.2 million
dollars...It really doesn't sound like alot, but thats AM radio....Figure out
what it would run on Television...Betcha its closer to $10 million a month...
That would be $120 million a year, or how about this...FOUR TIMES what they
spend on R&D...A company like Chrysler spends $600 million a year on
advertising in the United States. Thats just over half of what they spend on
R&D...Don't expect Commodore to spend over $16 million a year on advertising,
it is more inline with the real world. I think that they better get 2.0 out
on the A500 before they start any ad blitz, and they might just be doing
that..Kickstart 1.3 is very simular to the 1.0 I had in 1985...Not real bad,
but very dated...

I would also hope they do not focus on the Amiga 500 when they advertise, but
just show what an AMIGA can do...Before they focused on the Amiga 500...They
should focus on the AMIGA only, no specific model...

Apple hardly mentions specific models on their national ads, except when they
came out with the LC and Classic...And those ads were great! I mean, the
commerical with the college Professor preeching mass production was really
awsome!! Something that really hits people hard over here...The guy from the
commerical was even on the radio being interviewed!! Man, talk about
commericals that are dead on, Apples had 'em...

I have a real point though, why don't the local Amiga dealers get together and
put up a few bucks each, and start radio ads...We have enough dealers in Metro
Detroit to afford a small media blitz...I mean, when POWER UP was going, it
would have been the best time to do it, but I guess the dealers don't
advertise either, they want the main company to do it...The local dealers do
spend money on direct mailings, but that doesn't hit people who don't allready
shop at their store since they only mail on their own mailing list...Radio ads
probably would be more effective...

Its a two way street, and the local dealers have to advertise as well...

Be glad the Commodore Amiga doesn't have a very established name in every
household. When those goddam German Nazi kill the Jew games were in the
national spotlight it could have really hurt sales if they would have
mentioned the computer that they were on....Instead of mentioning the Amiga,
they just said avaiable on home computers, so IBM compatibles took the hit
since they are the most known...But I hear from users on my BBS that if you
go to the local Jewish Community Center they have Amigas on display with
those games showing the hate games...
