[comp.sys.amiga.introduction] A novice netter's question

nygardm@nntp-server.caltech.edu (Michael T. Nygard) (04/26/91)

I keep hearing about .sig files, not to mention seeing them on just about
every posting I read. My question is this: How does one create a .sig file,
and once created, how does it work?

This is probably not the right group for this, but I couldn
find "net.questions.dumb"! 8{)

The way it works on our system is, you make a text file in your home directory
(ie, the one you are in when you first log on) called ".signature", and give
it global read permission. This file is then automagically included with
posted news.

Actually, the group is called "news.newusers.questions"

That's depends what kind of mail are you using. In a Vax/Vms you have to
create that file and include it by hand on the end of your message.

I am sorry, but it is a secret that I will not tell you. :)

In your home directory (of an HP UNIX or similar system), make an ascii
file with your favorite editor, and save it under the name '.signature'.
It will automatically be appended to newsgroup posts, and it can be appended
to newsgroup private mail via the prompt when saving a message.

Or, you could make a macro, as found in JR Comm (40 macros) or Handshake
(6 macros).

Or, you could just type it by hand, like I do!

In case there are VMS novices out there that need to know, you can have
.sigs added automatically. It just depends on the s/w and as there are
many different s/w packages about I won't try to summarise here.

If you need this and your VMS site administrator can't help you you may
find help in news.newusers.questions (or whatever it's called). If you
are really stuck you could send me e-mail if you use either of ANU NEWS
or EVE (TPU) or EDT to do your news posting.

I don't use any sig other than that below and it isn't automatically (I
suppose my fingers know it well enough by now though) generated ... :-)
