Hi, I'm really new to this. I have an Amiga 500 and would like to get a printer. I was looking in the Extras manual and have decided to stick to those printers in the manual. So far I like the NEC because it has the highest density. A big requirement is Letter Quality printing for things like resumes. Does anyone have anything to say about what to watchout for when buying a printer? I'm afraid to get one only to find out it doesn't work on my Amiga. Please help, comment, or whatever. I hope I'm in the right newsgroup. Clare clare@nynexst.com Also which word-processing packages give you letter quality printing. I heard that there was a problem with ProWrite not printing at the highest resolution. Thanks!

It can handle 360x360 resolution, and is EpsonQ compatible. Also, almost any printer you buy should be 24 pins. If it is EpsonQ compatible, get the EpsonQPlus V5.0 driver from ab20.larc.nasa.gov. This driver lets you easily change fonts, and gives you added resolutions for any EpsonQ compatible printer. As to the second question, PROWRITE, PROWRITE, PROWRITE! ProWrite is simply THE BEST wordProcessing program available. Imposrts documents from other word processors using a convert utility, supports multiple fonts of any size, can import any IFF picture, and can output PostScript with the ProScript interpreter/program. It is the fastest WYSIWYG word processor. And it allows you to print either with standard AMIGA fonts, or using any of the fonts your printer has built-in. You can even use a printer font, and print picture in the same document. I have had a Nec P2200 for over two years now, having used it extensively with PageStream I can tell you that the quality is excellent and the speed reasonable. It is great value for money, especially since you can get it cheaper as there have been two 'upgrades' to it: the P2+ and now the P20 with somewhat better paper handling and a higher speed. These two are fully compatible with the P2200 (they may have new features I don't know about, but these should not interfere with normal operation) If you have more money, you might want to go for its big brother: the P60 (also evolved through P6, P6+, now P60), this one has a bigger buffer (80K, instead of 8K), a higher speed, more fonts, quieter etc. Additionally, if you want to use the PD TeX implementation PasTeX, it provides Nec emulation and therefore is very well suited to the Nec printers. All Nec's have 360x360 dpi resolution. If your budget allows it, you certainly should have a look at the HP Laserjet series (II is cheap and good, III is very good (enhancement technology for 600 dpi) ) An alternative to the lasers is the Inkjet 500, it has 300dpi (360?) and is very quiet. There is a multitude of printers out there that the preferences drivers support, but you should go for a 24 pin or a laser for good quality. Writing short to medium documents with lots of footnotes and stuff is the specialty of Wordperfect (Very slow on unaccelerated Amigas when processing large documents), but you could also take a look at a commercial or PD TeX package, especially if you want fancy formatting and stuff like mathematical notations etc. On the subject of your printer, WP also supports zillions of printers, if you are concerned about what printer it will work with: If it outputs characters or hot coffee, WP will support it :) WP has the most features of any wordprocessor available on the Amiga. Unfortunately it has still some bugs, and is not up to par with the PC versions, so try before you buy! If you are mainly using it for writing programs, I recommend CygnusEd, the best editor in the known universe :^) It has got everything from macros to an ARexx port and is very fast. > Thanks! -Thomas.
