[comp.sys.amiga.introduction] Movie doesn't work on a 3000?

peter@Sugar.NeoSoft.com (Peter da Silva) (06/22/91)

OK, I think, I'll start collecting a few of these neat animations for my
Amiga and have more stuff to wow people with. So I grab Movie 1.3 and a few
anims. No dice, they won't even open the window on my 3000/16. Rats. Next
try, movie 2.0...

Does movie work under 2.0? I know I've only got about 1 MB of effective RAM,
but the anims I'm trying to run are advertised as running in a 1 MB Amiga.
Hmmm, I thinks. Let's try booting under 1.3.2...

No dice. OK, folks, how do I get these anims displayed? Gotta be on my 3000:
my 1000 has only 512K...

I have never had a problem with movie not working under 1.3 on my 3000, but I was
only able to get it to work under 2.0 by setting the screen overscan preference to
have no overscan at all.

Movie doesn't like overscan, and it takes its screen information from the
Workbench screen. Try USEing standard overscan when using movie.

So, then, are there any better movie players out there that can handle
Sculpt movies?

The Movie is not compatible with 2.0. It was optimized for speed and does not
open a screen with OpenScreen(). It's a low level hack, which even crashes
when you press Left Amiga-M. The Movie was written by Eric Graham. As far as
I know, he no longer writes software for the Amiga and Byte by Byte now sells
only Mac versions of Sculpt 4D. I don't think that we will ever get updates.
So was is only way to do something against it: A friend of mine disassembled
Movie to find out how it works and wrote a completely new Animation player
which can play Anim 5 and Movie format. This Player will probably be available
as Public Domain, but we have to fix some bugs first.
The Movie format is up to three times faster than Anim 5 with complex
Animations. We think this format is very suitable for Animations with
25/30 fps and we will try to further optimize it. We usually convert all our
Anim 5 Animations to Movie because of the speed.
We think that other companies should continue to support the Movie (or may be
later an extended Movie) Format. We would like to see a Movie support in
AmigaVision. We could publish the Movie format and some sample source code,
but I don't know if this is legal or not, because Byte by Byte has never
published their format.
We also considered to disassemble Sculpt 4D to fix some 2.0 bugs. This seems
to be the only possibility to get things fixed in old (no longer supported)
Software.
