[comp.unix.amiga] 3000UX performance???

hunter@bacchus.esa.oz.au (James Gardiner [Hunter]) (03/04/91)

We just obtained a 3000UX for demonstration porposes.
We took it to one of the Biggest companies in Australia
for them to do some benchmarks with it.
They used the "byte" benchmarks program and came out with
TERRIBLE results for the amiga 3000UX 100meg drive and 8meg mem.
(xx under 4 meg is not nice to use)
Anyway, they had a Old NCR 68000 based box right next to it running
a 020 I think.. and well the NCR kinda over powered it in
drystones(spell). The amiga I/O was not that good either.
This amiga 3000 was an old rev 4 mother board but I dought this would
make a difference.

I then ran this byte program on my Sun3/50 at home to compare and it
was also noticable faster. The amiga 3000 does do better in plane
number crunch FP etc but I want it for more then that. (multi user/server)
My main concern is that the hardware SHOULD, be all argument,
do better then what this test shows.

Will the release version of amiga unix make a difference?
When Is it due?

Also. we had some strange happenings with a 2024 monitor.
It refuses to work some times. This was told to be common
by commodore Aust.

Open look is on the BOTTOM of my favorate window managers.
(twm please)

The speed it through data out while ftping to my sun and some apollos
was quite good. It seemed to keep up with any ethernet that I told it
to through data down. (nice ethernet card commodore ;)

Amiga UNIX complete. I couldn't imagin a more complete release.
News/mail extras already in the systems as standard.

I would like a Xlogin. I did not look into this but.

Note here. there is many diff versions of the kernal on the
drive. To put extra mem in the machine involved linking
a kernel called 8AmigaUX or similar. It is not auto config in.
the CHIP memory is only used for screens.
extra memory boards are useless. ie a 2000 memory board with 8
meg does you no good. its just not used.
