[comp.unix.amiga] What is Amiga Unix really like

hakimian@tek4.eecs.wsu.edu (Karl Hakimian - staff) (05/09/91)

I would like to get information comparing Amiga Unix with Unix from other
vendors on other platforms. The systems that I am most familiar with are

AT&T - SYSVR3
Dec - Ultrix (mips)
HP - hp-ux
Sequent - Dynix
SGI - Irix
Tektronix - UTek

I would like to receive mail from anyone who has used one or more of these
systems, and is currently using SYSVR4 on the Amiga. What I would like to here
is what do you like better about the Amiga Unix vs. XXX on YYY, or what did
XXX on YYY does better than Amiga Unix.

I would also like to here from people who have ported software to Amiga Unix.
Specifically I would like to here about the following packages;

g++
Gnu emacs
nntp
perl
rn
SeeTeX (Xtek)
TeX
xrn

Thanks.

Please do post this to the benefit of all who read this group. I think
this has general interrest.

I was given an account on an A3000 a while ago, but I have been unable to
connect to it for a while.. (it's either offline, off, or gone..)

Anyway, I was quite impressed (for the short time I had a play on it), but
I could not for the life of me work out how to change my login shell!!!

The machine was quite quick, considering that I had to telnet 2/3 of the
way around the world to get to it (Australia->US->Netherlands).

I can't really say much more, because I didn't have very long on it..

Well I haven't used Amiga UNIX, but I can tell you this much. Under
Berkeley, the user can change his login shell with a command (the name
of it escapes me at the moment) but under System V, only the system
administrator can change the login shell. And since Amiga UNIX is
System V (albeit Release 4), I would assume the latter is why you
couldn't change your login shell.

I have the sources to the most current release (I forget the number and
don't have it close at hand), so, unfortunately, I cannot use the gcc
sources that Commodore ported for me. I am very close to finishing the
port of the latest gcc. When I finish that, then I will start on g++.
If you want, I can tell you how it goes.

# perl
Well, the version I have doesn't work "right out of the box". I had
to do a lot of manual configuration, but code changes were unnecessary.
(Good job, Larry!) The dbm library on the Amiga is completely broken,
(both ndbm and dbm) so I can't use it.

# rn
I expect to get my UUNET account and password in the mail today (I
already received my Nutshell book and answers to everyone's questions
about UUNET, so I expect the rest today). If it comes in time,
I will be downloading and porting News and rn to my machine all
weekend. If anyone has any gotcha's for either of these, please
send email to "uunet!gimlet!logan" (my home address on the A3000).

I have heard that C news is evil, and that it is the best thing since
sliced bread. Which comments are accurate? I have always used B News.
Which one should I port?

# SeeTeX (Xtek)
# TeX
Someone else already posted about these. I haven't tried them.

# xrn
I'd like to get a copy of this, I think. What does it do and
where can it be found? If it was posted, I can get if from UUNET.

B News comes already installed on Amiga Unix 1.1. Have a look in
/usr/public/bin and /usr/lib/news. Note that I haven't actually TRIED
it but did note that it's there!

Both. C News is a pain in the butt sometimes, but the factor-of-500 speed
improvement in unbatching news (I kid thee not, that's what I measured) is
worth it.

C News.

What problems did you have with it? I linked bnews with dbm on the latest
releases and it works fine (much faster than letting it manage the history
stuff itself).

I haven't tried anything with ndbm.
