[comp.unix.amiga] Motif package?

jea@prodigal.psych.rochester.edu (Joanne Albano) (05/31/91)

Dale recently posted that Motif will be available on the
AmigaDos side, I wonder if Motif will be packaged on the
3000 uxh/d/whatever machines along with X11R4.

Since C= is UI and OL, I doubt Motif will be available soon from
them... But, I could be wrong, who knows? Maybe they'll make it
	an option or something?

There are a variety of UI members (us for one) who have adopted motif.
I for one can't stand what I've seen of open look.
I'm contemplating the purchase of a 3000UX* and I think one of the first things
I'm going to do is port a different interface.

That seems likely, --HOWEVER-- I recently saw an --->AT&T<--- ad
for their Motif package which they are selling for '386/'486
and 3B2's...

My impression is that bringing up Motif is simply a matter of
compiling it. At least that's how hard it was to bring up
on our Sun's here. Seeing as how X11 does a REALLY GOOD job
of hiding system dependencies it should do a good job of
hiding System V <--> SunOS dependencies.

It shouldn't be too hard too compile it on either of those systems.

I heard somewhere that Suns workstations are supposed to be using System V
in the near future anyway and that SunOS has sorta been becoming more and
more "V-like" in recent versions anyway, so I reckon that there probably
should not be any real bother compiling Motif on SVR4 for the Ami.
(mind you I have never used SVR4 nor seen the Motif code - correct any
misconceptions I have shown here)

I started the discussion on whether Motif would be available
on the AMIGA and received a circular from GFXbase today
stating that it should be available some time this summer.

But that Motif is for the AmigaDOS version of GFXbase's X11R4
implementation if I remember correctly. Doesn't fly for
Amiga UNIX though, different compilers, different linkers.
For now, the objects and librarys on AmigaDOS and Amiga UNIX
	can't be mixed and matched.

A german company, supported directly from our office, has ported
Motif (1.1). It was actually shown on Amiga UNIX at the Systec and
Orgatec shows '90, and on CeBIT '91. This does not indicate that
Commodore plans to bundle/sell this or any other ports of Motif
which I could announce here. What I would *like* to tell you,
though, is:

Given that Amiga UNIX 1.1 comes with X11R3, it has not been all
that easy. In fact, this company also ported X11R4 libraries (not
the server) because that is what Motif 1.1 needs.

Apart from this extra work, a few bugs had to be found & fixed.
One of them being that (at least in their version of) the Motif
1.1 source treats short's as 32-bits, which may be the case on
OSF's reference machines, but is not on Amiga UNIX and many others.
Quite a nasty one.

It hasn't been their top priority project but judging from their
experience I would say it equivalents to some months of man-spare-
hours for you.
