REPRINTED WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM THE LA TIMES 3/29/91 : Diego Maradona, the captain of Argentina's national team and defending Italian League champion Napoli, tested positive for drugs after a recent game, his team [Napoli] said Thursday. Giorgio Perinetti, Napoli's sporting director, said the Italian Soccer Federation would not say what he tested positive for. La Repubblica [an italian newspaper] reported that Maradona tested positive after Napoli's 1-0 victory over Bari on March 17th. A spokesman for the Italian Soccer Federation refused comment, but did say that results of a second test will be available by the end of the week. Maradona could not be reached for comment. Regulations provide for suspensions of six months to two years for players who test positive, with the suspension recognized worldwide by soccer's governing body.
