[comp.dcom.fax] Using U.S. purchased faxs in foreign countries

garys@techbook.com (Gary Scott) (12/31/90)

Faxes purchased in the U.S will work just fine in a non-U.S. country. Just
be sure to purchase a fax that does NOT have a phone in it. I don't know if
it is possible to purchase inexpensive faxes without the phone. I have seen
a few industrial faxes sold that way.

The problem is that the ring voltages for phones is not internationaly
standardized. In fact the U.S. is one of the few countries that one phone
standard over a large land mass, i.e. Europian countries each tend to have
there own phone system and it often is incompatible with their neighbor.
This is just one of the problems that they are trying to fix before 1992(?)
when the E.C. becomes a reality.
