Typically G4-machines include hardware and software for interworking with G3.
This will remain true for many years to support the huge installed number
of G3-machines. Technically this is done by a G3-modem and a codec for
PCM<->analog conversion, and some software, of course ;-)
Some countries even require a G4-machine to be G3-compatible to get the
PTT-approval.
