Does anyone know of a Postscript to Fax modem/method/anything technique. Our humble old Unix TROFF system generates some mean memos and letterheads on the laser printer. Would be nice if we could mail them direct. Would also be nice to receive FAXes and output to Postscript printer. .......................................................... postscript to fax: The only thing I really know about is a product from Gammalink called Gammascript which converts PS and HPGL files to group 3 fax format for transmission (used with their fax products). When I was trying to install the gammalink products, I seem to remember that the program loaded as a TSR and wanted 2.5MB of extended memory. Not something that can be loaded and unloaded with ease. But at least it's a PC solution. fax to postscript: well, I'm not sure where in the work I got it but I compiled a program that converts group 3 fax files into TIFF files and from there, you can use whatever file format converters that are out there (pbm, fbm, etc) to try and get it into a format where you can use whatever postscript tools you have to get it back into postscript. Of course, its all created on a UNIX system and it's not pretty. Finally, look into what Adobe is trying to do with their new postscript fax stuff. This is probably the best deal although I seem to remember it from their conference as being pretty basic and lackluster (rough impressions of their concept of postscript fax) when you compare it to some PC or PC network fax solutions out there now (think of postscript fax as remote postscript printing). CDA support inbound and outbound postscript. On inbound, you can have the FAX hit paper or go into the mail system or just straight to disk/printer queues. Don't have the order particulars in front of me, but your Digital salesman should be able to help. If you have a PC somewhere in the loop, look into Hijaak. It seems to be able to handle all of the popular graphics file formats, and can control many PC FAX boards. If you want to go the long way around...use a Postscript to Epson translator (I believe a few are commercially available.). Have the FAX board set up to capture LPT?: data. (The SatiFAXtion board and a few others can do this.) You might end up liking this way more thanks to the wide availability of Postscript emulation programs that might come in handy for other odd jobs. I personally use Ventura Publisher to make up a page, then print to the LaserMaster board in file mode. It then writes a .PCX file. I can transmit this file with 3/4 of my FAX boards. I'm hoping someone gets on the stick and makes a good OS/2 FAX program soon! (Intel has a program set up to assist programmers in doing this, but nobody has taken a bite.) Good luck! --kyler

From PS->TIFF A product called LaserGo for the PC allows you to turn postscript into tiff. Although their tiff driver seems to cut off the last 1/2 inch of the image. I dont know if they have gotten their tiff driver right or not. One problem is that they only have 35 fonts last time I checked. I use framemaker on the sparc and I have to make sure I dont get carried away with all these fonts frame has. Has anybody hacked the latest Ghostscript to make a ps->tiff converter out of it for unix? /bruce deadhead@cup.portal.com "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, did you enjoy the show?"
