[comp.dcom.fax] Group 3 standards developments

hrs1@cbnewsi.att.com (herman.r.silbiger) (04/11/91)

At the March meeting of CCITT Study Group VIII, progress was made on
several Group 3 fax enhancements. The Binary File Transfer protocol (BFT) is
now a draft standard, and bit assignments in the DIS/DCS have been made.
Further information on the use of the BFT protocol in G3 fax van be obtained
from Phil Bogosian, tel +1 408 247 2195, fax: +1 415 745 7652.

A complete text for Annex B to Rec. T.30, which describes the 64 Kbit/sec
option to G3, which will work both in full and half duplex, was completed
at the meeting, based on a US contribution and supported by the UK and
several other countries. It will be discussed again in October, and the
intention is to propose it for approval in March, 1992. This item is still
not fully accepted by some delegations, but its value is becoming ever more
evident. Some network providers are convinced that the availablity of G3-64
will provide a strong motivation for connecting to ISDN. For those seriously
interested in the protocol, I will e-mail a copy (without the flow diagrams)
upon request.

There is still discussion on whether pel conversion should be provided when
sending from a G3 terminal with currently standardized resolutions to
terminals with the proposed new optional resolutions of 200x200, 300x300, and
400x400 pels/inch. A report which contained subjective tests on this type
of interworking showed that subjectd did not perceive the resulting slight
distortions.

Finally, no progress was made at this meeting on the G3 character mode, due
to an inability to agree on a character set. I still believe that agreement
will be reached to also approve the character mode option in 1992.
