[comp.dcom.fax] Using the modem to send a Fax message under MSDOS/UNIX?

rganesh@nu.cs.fsu.edu (Ganesh Rangarajan) (06/04/91)

Hi Fax'ers!

I would like to know whether there are any public domain/or otherwise
packages which let you transform your pc or Unix box into a fax sending
machine.. This would come in very handy if one has to send regular ascii
text often and does not have access to a fax machine *but has a PC sitting
on the desk!* :-)

I know that AT&T has started a system whereby one can actually
login and type in mail (like E-mail) and then get their system to deliver
the fax to any phone number.. I can find out more for those interested..
I think one needs to set up an account with AT&T -> membership is ~40
dollars/month. Once everything is setup, I think a Fax Page (with cover)
costs 40cents anywhere in the US and there are ways of checking if your
fax has been delivered or not.

I think AT&T even offers special services like postscript ->document
conversion etc. The neatest thing about is that one can either login
to AT&T via modem (1-800 number) or access through the net.

  Thanks in adv.,

There are LOTS of fax modems for PCs. Some are transmit receive
and some are transmit only. We are using a 4800 bps transmit only fax
modem (and 2400 bps data transmit/receive) available from JDR Microdevices
(408 559 1200) for $119.95. I'm sure you'll get lots of responses
from others with their favorite fax cards.
You also mentioned the AT&T Email capability to send faxes.
I have received faxes that were generated this way wthru MCI Mail. I
don't know about costs. We've just received stuff that way. We
generally send stuff out thru fax modem if other end has a fax
machine. If other end has Compuserve or MCI Mail, we send it
thru internet connection on Cleveland Freenet.

	Good Luck!

	Harold
