From: joseph@milton.u.washington.edu (Joseph Chan) Newsgroups: comp.dcom.fax Subject: Simple connection between fax and fax modem References: Sender: Followup-To: Distribution: world Organization: University of Washington, Seattle Keywords: I have a standalone fax machine and a fax modem (send/receive at 9600 baud) installed on my 286 machine. There is no RS232 port on the fax machine. I have one phone line at home. Here is what I am trying to accomplish (i.e. use the fax machine as a scaner): 1. Connect the fax machine to the fax modem thru a regular modular cord. 2. Send image from the fax machine to the fax modem over the telephone cable. (since I have one phone line at home, I can not send the fax image over the telephone system) 3. Edit and manipulate the image. One other thing I would like to try (i.e. use the fax machine as a printer to print image received by the fax modem): 1. Let the fax modem receive the incoming fax message. Screen the message by viewing the fax message with the bitcom software. 2. Send the fax image to the fax machine for printing. (The reason for this: the Epson 24 header printer is very slow to print out a fax image, the fax machine can print at less than 30sec per page). Has any one done some similar thing to this? Thank you for any pointer. (since I have one phone line at home, I can not send the fax >image over the telephone system) I have a Murata fax machine, and an Abaton Interfax modem (with class 2 firmware). I found that I could send faxes from the Murata to my modem without using two phone lines by the following setup: The Murata has an RJ11 jack for the phone line from the wall, and an RJ11 jack for its own telephone handset. I did the reverse of what they said to do in the instructions: I plugged the telephone line cord into the "phone" jack, and then wired the faxmodem and the handset to the "line" jack, through a splitter. This enabled me to convince the fax machine to start sending (it needs a dial tone to convince it to begin the t30 handshake). When the faxmodem answers, the internal circuits automatically cut out the "phone" jack, i.e., in my case the phone line, and leave the fax machine talking to the modem. Btw, there is a tar file of a copy of the draft Class 2 modem spec which someone faxed in as a bunch of 1-d huffman g3 format files, available from anonymous FTP from tr.ai.mit.edu in /pub/class2man.tar

Along the same lines as the TLS-3 (a nice box in its own right, but more oriented towards testing than as a demo switch) is the Proctor & Associates Phone Demo II. This little box was under $300 last time we bought one (we have several), and it has two lines with dialtone and the like. You dial any seven digits on a line and it rings the other line or gives back an appropriate busy signal. We use ours for testing our fax software, and it is an absolute necessity for trade shows and the like. It's *wonderful*. Proctor also makes a four-line demonstrator with considerably more features (useful for testing multiple modems at once). We use Panasonic 308's which can often be bought used for $250. They give you a full pbx or key switch. Eight internal lines and three external trunk lines. They work very well for this type of thing. You can have three intercom connections plus two external connections going all at once. For trade shows you just get one outside line, one handset and demo up to seven devices. -- Stuart Lynne Computer Signal Corporation, Canada ...!van-bc!sl 604-937-7785 604-937-7718(fax) sl@wimsey.bc.ca
