The guy who wrote PBMPLUS is about to release a new version of it, which will include a 'proper' (read 'better') way to convert a PPM file to an 8-colour dither. So I won't bother posting my program. What I will do is post a C program to compress these 'dithered' PPM files to 15K files (all the easier to d/load to the Beeb!), and a BBC BASIC program to display them in Mode 2. I'll also start working on a way to convert BBC screens into this format (PPM). Once a file is in this format you'll be able to convert it to GIF (using ppmtogif) or other formats. There is no 'standard' for BBC screen files. It is best to convert BBC screens to Archimedes sprite, or Clear file. Then it can be converted to GIF/TIFF. The problem with good old Beeb's screens is that you cannot deduct the resolution/mode from the data itself (a 20K file could be mode 0, mode 1 or mode 2). There were these two programs "LdPic" and "SvPic". They also compressed the data. I should still have LdPic somewhere. Could be an idea to incorporate them into your program.
