In case anyone's wondering, ANY password can be used with the anonymous
user on the vast majority of FTP sites (I use the letter "a" only, because
I'm lazy !). Certain sites insist on an e-mail address format for the
password and I've sussed that "a@b" works for them too :-)

But clever viruses would be able to circumvent this (simply looks for a
pattern of instructions and patches it to return "image OK"),

There are no easy ways to stop viruses. It's as simple as that, although
you could run my VKiller occasionally to keep a watch out for them :-)

When comp.binaries.acorn starts, I think the convention should switch to
using utilities that are PD to pack/ASCIIfy the archive (I flout this at
the moment by using Spark 2.00). This *must* involve compression too.
At the moment, the only two viable alternatives seem to be:

1. !SparkPlug (V1) archives, uuencoded using the UUencoder on SID.
The only snag with this is that it involves messing with TWO separate
programs to get the final posting, because !SparkPlug doesn't uuencode
   automatically.

2. !Extract/!Submit - being worked on by Philip Colmer.
This is a combination of UN*X-compatible tar, compress and uuencode,
with a reasonable Desktop interface in front. If Philip is reading this,
could he please post up (or e-mail me personally) the latest stable version
of this, so people can have a play with it ? The big advantage of this is
that you can use a UN*X system to decode it before downloading (hence if
the !ReadMe makes it sound boring, then you don't have to bother wasting
   any more time).
