I know that Canon LBP4's used only to be shipped with 512K as standard. Secondly, the LBP4 has a programming language called Caspel, this I believe is the only way of getting graphics from the thing (I do not believe any graphics modes other than this are supported - although I could be wrong and there may be emulation for say the BJ10e which Canon also produce). I know of only one company which started to produce a driver for Caspel, although this was scrapped. Thridly, the printer could be used as a LaserDirect HiRes device as all LBP4's have a direct video interface - although this seems like rather an expensive printer driver (~#400). If you do intend to go this route then ensure that if you get a LaserDirect HiRes board that it is for the LBP4 as there are timing differences between the LBP4 and LBP8 (along with some other changes to the gate array contents).
