I've tested a Taxan 795 on an A540. The monitor is not capable of
displaying the 'normal' screenmodes, modes 18, 19, 20, 21, 27, 28 and the
new super VGA mode 31 will work ok. In modes 18, 19, 20 and 21 the right
and left edges are not straight.
The 24/36 MHz VIDC clock on the A540 is switched automatically
to 36 MHz when needed (mode 31). If I knew a call to switch the clock
from 24 to 36 MHz when the display is in the not working modes, perhaps
the 795 will lock them succesfully.
One more strange feature of the 795 is a thin black horizontal
line about 2 inches from the bottom of the screen. Very annoying when you
are in the desktop and know the line is there. I was told this is common
with the sony trinitron tube.

This is unbelievable! Does this mean normal modes don't work with
multisynchs in general or is this taxan monitor a particularly
awkward case? I've just sent of for a Nec 3D & I'm going to be really
upset if it does this. Anyone used it on a 540?

[Need a new monitor coz my Acorn badged one has developed a terribke
judder - it's only a month old :-( ... going back this weekend]

No, it really depends on the multisync monitor. I have an EIZO 9060S at
home and it workes with ALL modes perfectly well and has a beautiful, sharp
image.
The Taxan monitor doesn't show the 'normal' modes beacuse in these modes the
VIDC clock is changed back to 24Mhz. There are modules though, that leave the
VIDC clock at 36Mhz also in the normal modes, so the Taxan ( or EIZO 9070 )
can synchronize. I don't know about the horizontal scan frequency range of the
NEC 3D but if it doesn't synchronize at 15.xx kHz then you need a module that
leaves the VIDC clock at 36MHz. (Your eyes will also be happy, becuase the
frame rate goes up to 75Hz and the image doesn't flicker anymore).

No, it is only the case of this one. Your NEC 3D should be able to show the
other screen modes.
In any case, if you call AcornBBS in Holland at +31 206631849 and download a
file called SuperTool or something you'll find a complete description
together with control software of how to build your own VIDCenhancer ala the
one from Atomwide. And it'll cost you less than 10# !

This is my first posting, so bear with me.
My Acorn badged monitor "blew up" just after the warranty ran o
t, actually the line transformer blew, so I was told. Anyways, I bought a Taxan
775, and I'm	very pleased with it myself, apart from it being a little dim on
my A310.
I heard that the 795 can't display normal modes (in BAU) , and since
they made a point of saying that, I presume that this is a problem with just
this monitor.
	Sorry I can't help more.

I don't know about the A540 with the 795 bui I recently bought a Taxan 775
for my A310 and discovered a thin black line appearing at the *top* of the
screen. The way to cure this is to move the entire image down about 1/4"
using the v.pos control and then resize the image with v.size.

This produces an excellent picture, even if it is rather small.
