I've finally got around to installing a new harddisc, some time ago I mailed a question about ST506 drives - well the drive I've got is one thanks for those replies, bascially if there's a 34-way and 20-way cable from the drive then is probably an ST506. I've got a SCSI drive inside the Archimedes, and this 10MB (old) drive as an external, powered from the internal PSU - just spliced the power lead. I've noticed that the PSU gets rather hot during intensive use of the external H/d, have I overloaded it ? -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- - JANET E-mail : vanaards@uk.ac.man.cs.p4 (Steven van Aardt) -- -- Warning this user has been designated for termination on the 21.6.91 -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am currently running a 440+arm3 with 2 40mb internal hard drives, an external 5 1/4 floppy and a Brainsoft Multipod. So far, it's holding up very well. If your 10mb is very old, it may take a disproportionate amount of power to drive it. It may be a good idea to check the current consumption on the +12 and +5 leads for that drive. Do you have in internal fan installed? If not, make sure you fit one. One other trick is to put a piece of card/metal behind the fan to force the airflow thru the psu casing. Rough diagram follows:- | o o o o o| |o o o o o | PSU housing | o o o o o| |__________| | / ^ |-- / | Back of the machine. | | / | | / AIR | | / \metal or card air FLOW ->| | / deflector. |__| / |____________________________ Hope this helps...
