Does anyone know how I can connect a harddisk to my BBC, its an ST506 10MB drive. I think the 1MHz Bus comes into play somewhere but I'll need to know what software/hardware I'll need. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- - JANET E-mail : vanaards@uk.ac.man.cs.p4 (Steven van Aardt) -- -- Warning this user has been designated for termination on the 21.6.91 -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will need a host adapter card to convert from the 1MHz bus to SCSI signals. Then you will need a ACB4000 (SCSI to ST506 converter) to put between the drive and the host adapter card. Ive heard the ACB5000 series are an updated board but the ACB4000 is more than adequate. Note: Host Adapter cards are needed as due to the best of my knowledge no one makes an 1MHz bus to ST506 card. Its a simple card and costs approx US$100. It may be less but thats what it costs here in Aussie. The ACB4000 is made by Adaptec and is quite common in BBC/Acorn circles. You should be able to source one either through a User group or your local Acorn dealer. Approx cost is US$300. (Again converted from our prices) Software: ADFS has the relevant code to talk to the 1MHz bus. If you own a Master it comes inbuilt. Otherwise get a ROM from your dealer and plug it in. you wont be able to access ADFS floppies as the Beebs dont have a 1770 or 1772 disc controller as default. If you are going to run ADFS on a Beeb then remember ADFS will claim about 3.5K (approx) for its workspace. Some of your programs/games will not work with it and you may need to alter them to load properly. P.S. The Master Compacts dont have a 1MHz bus as standard. The Compact Companion provides a 2MHz bus through which it is possible to run a HD. (Ive seen one running) >-- > --------------------------------------------------------------------------- > - JANET E-mail : vanaards@uk.ac.man.cs.p4 (Steven van Aardt) -- > -- Warning this user has been designated for termination on the 21.6.91 -- > --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mark Matthewson Long distance runners can keep going longer t891368@minyos.xx.rmit.oz.au Is your job secure? mark@gnu.ai.mit.edu Do you have the code to prove it?
