[comp.sys.acorn] SUMMARY: 4Mb upgrades for A310

sal1@ukc.ac.uk (S.A.Lockhart) (06/17/91)

Thank you to all of you who responded to my news posting about 4Mb upgrades
to an A310. Here is a summary of the replies I recieved by mail:

From: Jason O'Broin <J.P.O'Broin@durham.ac.uk>

This is what I have - IFEL - when I bought it I think it cost 350 (inc VAT)
which included a MEMC1a - this was the DIY version, so I asked the Physics
Technician here at Durham to fit it for me. He reported no problems -
although it requires a bit of soldering expertise... I have had no problem
what so ever with it since (touch wood) - however, I understand that the
design has changed since... but I would recommend it.

From: "L.R.Gordon" <lrg@ukc.ac.uk>

I have the IFEL upgrade fitted to my A310, which I fitted myself. It took
ages to come, but has excellent instructions, and is moderately easy (if
 time consuming) to fit.

From: truemanc@project4.computer-science.manchester.ac.uk

I ordered the IFEL board in the second week of April and got it in third
week of May - they said that would be the delay before I purchased it.

As for the board itself; I haven't actually installed it but from other
owner's comments it is pretty straight forward - just think before you
 rip out anything.

From: Michael Seifert <seifert@freja.diku.dk>

I saw one for 199 GBP - all I remember is that it was a small add in the
back pages of BAU latest issue (June). It both gave 4Mb and also room
for larger ROMs when new RISC-OS arrives.

From these responses, I think I will probably go for the upgrade from
Simtec, if I can find more details about it. As a second choice, I would
probably go for the IFEL upgrade. I will also be very wary about upgrading
the machine myself.

Thanks once again.

Hello, I am considering purching one of Acorn's ARM based systems.

If the group could please give me an idea of how much third party
hardware and software, espically programing languages that are avaliable.
Also, what do you think of Acorn's UNIX systems if you have any experence.
thanks and God Bless in Jesus Name.
