[comp.sys.novell] File not found problems

brian@rtf.bt.co.uk (Brian N Butterworth) (12/05/90)

Help! I'm having problems with netware 3.1. Does anyone know of any change
to 3.1 (from 3.0) that would cause files to appear to be readable to the likes
of WordPerfect and DrawPerfect one minute and then not the next.

Problem no 1: DrawPerfect, when retreiving either a file or clip-art from
either the public area or user's own area, it fine to Look at them, but when
Retreive is selected one gets 'S:\WP51\GRAPHICS\.... not found' (for
example).

Problem no 2: WordPerfect. When a new document is created it has no styles.
As soon as styles are required (by pressing Alt-F8), the message 'S:\WP51\
STYLES\LIBRARY.STY not found' is displayed (this is the default style).

When Retreive style is selected, you can load the file.

Both of these (and other) problems happen for humble normal users and as
supervisor. The files in question are read-only sharable in read and file-scan
directories.

Thanks in advance.

Regarding 'file not found' errors on read-only files:

This occurs when applications attempt to open a read-only file for
reading and writing. It can be remedied at the workstation by setting
a parameter in SHELL.CFG or NET.CFG, according to Appendix B of the
NetWare 386 Installation manual:

'Prior to NetWare 2.1, a program could open a Read Only file with write
access without getting an error, though any attempt to write to the file
would produce an error. To be compatible with DOS, Advanced NetWare v2.1
and above will not allow a Read Only file to be opened for write access.
Setting the READ ONLY COMPATIBILITY to ON will cause the shell to revert
to the old mode and allow the open request to succeed.'
