[comp.sys.novell] NetWare for Macintosh

Is there any security implemented in this? Once a user is logged in, it
seems to allow the user search and read access to ALL directories. I would
like to allow my users SOME privacy with their files.

NOVELL UNVEILS NETWARE FOR MACINTOSH v3.0

Macintosh Desktop Systems Now Fully Integrated Into
NetWare

BOSTON, Mass., NETWORLD -- February 11, 1991 -- Novell,
Inc., developer of NetWare systems software products, today
unveiled NetWare for Macintosh v3.0, a complete AppleTalk
protocol-suite implementation that fully integrates
Macintosh desktop systems into the NetWare v3.11 network
computing environment.

NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 is implemented as a set of
NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) that deliver high-
performance AppleTalk Filing Protocol (AFP) and Printer
Access Protocol (PAP) services for Macintosh clients in the
NetWare v3.11 environment. With NetWare for Macintosh v3.0
running on NetWare v3.11, Macintosh users can share files
and print resources with DOS, Windows, OS/2 and UNIX desktop
systems. In addition, the NetWare for Macintosh AppleTalk
stack provides the basis for integrating the Macintosh with
complementary Novell services such as NetWare Communication
Services, NetWare NFS (Network File System) and NetWare FTAM
(File Transfer Access and Management).

"Our new product offers Macintosh users full access to
NetWare resources while preserving the native Macintosh
interface," said Steve Nelson, director of product marketing
at Novell's Walnut Creek development center. "The Macintosh
is an ideal personal computer for network computing. We use
Apple's networking standards to provide services for the
Macintosh; we use NetWare to add value to those services and
to integrate the Macintosh with other desktop computers and
other information environments."

"Since June of 1988, Macintosh, DOS and OS/2 users have been
able to work together by using Novell's NetWare," said Randy
Battat, Apple vice president of product marketing. "Today's
announcement is important because it extends this capability
further to include NetWare v3.11 servers."

Primary features of NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 include:

-o- Native mode NetWare access -- Macintosh users access
NetWare resources through the Macintosh network client
interface.

-o- NLM implementation -- For the first time, the
performance and added value of the NetWare v3.11 32-bit
environment -- system fault tolerance, resource accounting,
print management, internetwork routing and advanced security
-- are now available for Macintosh workstations.

-o- Full AFP 2.0 compliance -- Users are assured of data
integrity and reliability, and are kept current as Macintosh
technology evolves.

-o- Full AppleTalk Phase 1 and Phase 2 compliance --
Supports newer and larger AppleTalk Phase 2 networks, as
well as users remaining at AppleTalk Phase 1, or in
transition.

-o- Macintosh, DOS, Windows, OS/2 and UNIX users share
networked printers -- Applications can access Apple
LaserWriters or ImageWriters through NetWare print queues
via PostScript or Diablo 630 emulation.

-o- Support for AppleTalk routing over multiple cabling
systems -- Users can communicate over LocalTalk, Ethernet
and Token-Ring internetwork topologies.

-o- Macintosh client software -- Users can control NetWare
capabilities such as setting rights, assigning trustees,
managing print queues and sending messages to other
networked users. Network managers can use any Macintosh on
the network to perform administrative tasks such as adding
or deleting users and groups, assigning passwords and
setting file attributes.

NETWARE APPLETALK SUPPORT PACKAGE v3.0

Novell also announced a new NetWare AppleTalk Support
Package that adds AppleTalk protocols and AppleTalk routing
capabilities to the NetWare v3.11 operating system. The
NetWare AppleTalk Support Package features flexible
configuration for access to a variety of applications and
utilities and enables third-party network services using
AppleTalk.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS, PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

NetWare for Macintosh v3.0 requires the NetWare v3.11
network operating system. It will be available as an
optional product in April 1991 in two versions: a 20-user
version lists for U.S. $895 per server; a 100-user version
lists for U.S. $1995 per server. Through September 30,
1991, registered NetWare v3.0 customers will be updated to
NetWare v3.11 and receive the 100-user version of NetWare
for Macintosh v3.0 at no charge; registered NetWare v3.1
customers will be updated to NetWare v3.11 when they
purchase NetWare for Macintosh v3.0. The NetWare AppleTalk
Support Package lists for U.S. $495 per site license and
will be available in the second quarter of 1991 through
Novell's After Market Products group. Education institutions
which use the Education Account Purchase Program for
NetWare will be able to pruchase NetWare for Macintosh
