From the Novell Mailing List: From: Janet Perry <janetp%NOVELL.COM@uga.cc.uga.edu> Here's yesterday's press release about the agreement between Novell and IBM. NOVELL SIGNS PRODUCT LICENSING, DISTRIBUTION AND SUPPORT AGREEMENT WITH IBM IBM to Market and Support NetWare Products BOSTON, Mass., NETWORLD -- February 12, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., developer of NetWare systems software products, today announced that it has signed a product licensing, distribution, and support agreement with International Business Machines Corporation. Under the terms of the agreement, IBM will market, service and support Novell's network computing software, which includes the newly announced NetWare v3.11 product line for enterprise wide computing, as well as the NetWare v2.x products used by small business and workgroup computing customers. In addition, Novell and IBM have formalized their development relationship, each agreeing to develop products that enhance interoperability between Novell and IBM network computing environments. "Our customers want the flexibility to integrate varied computing environments through network computing," said Ray Noorda, Novell president and chief executive officer. "This relationship accelerates our ability to satisfy the needs of our respective customer by increasing the ease of use and interoperability of our products across local- and wide-area networks." As part of the agreement, the two companies will work toward integrating established and emerging standards in network computing. Novell's future product development plans include enhancements to NetWare that enable users of DOS and OS/2 desktop systems to connect concurrently to a Novell NetWare server and an IBM LAN Server, with a single login. Further, Novell intends to provide NetWare functionality on the OS/2 and AIX platforms in NetWare v3.2. Other Novell product plans include providing NetWare mirrored-server technology on the PS/2 family. For additional interoperability offerings. Novell and IBM's Communications Systems Division have agreed to work together. IBM intends to enhance its 8209 Bridge to support the NetWare-based IPX/SPX protocols, providing connectivity from the IBM environment into the NetWare environment. "Our relationship with Novell enables IBM to offer its customers the broadest network operating system product lines in the industry," said James A. Cannavino, IBM vice president and general manager, Personal Systems. To offer integration with external computing environments, Novell has already designed support for interoperability with the IBM environment into NetWare v3.11 server operating system. Novell's OS/2 Requester for OS/2 version 1.3, which is included in NetWare v3.11, supports OS/2's high- performance file system. Also included in NetWare v3.11 is the ability to send alerts to an IBM NetView network management console, allowing a system administrator to monitor a remote NetWare server from an IBM mainframe. In addition, NetWare v3.11 i supports Novell's optional NetWare for SAA product, providing interconnectivity between Networks and IBM's Systems Application Architecture. "Novell's strategy is to allow customers to use any popular desktop system for transparent access to information from the IBM environment, or from those environments established by other leading industry vendors," said Darrell Miller, Novell executive vice president of marketing and service. "This relationship will help us deliver that interoperability more effectively."
