Novell Netware - Australian Universities Agreement The Sydney University Computing Service has now finalised details for the supply of Novell Netware to all Australian Universities at substantial education discounts. A brief description of the various Netware versions and their comparitive pricing is given below Novell Netware is the industry standard for PC based file servers and is now expanding its functionality to include OS/2 and Macintosh workstations, and in the future, TCP/IP support. Being the industry standard for PC networks has meant it has been well supported by PC software. Products such as Windows for example works on Netware but not as yet on many other networks. Initially, Netware provided only a disk based server, but software available today can extend Netware to be a print server, communications server, or even an SQL server. The low cost entry point for a Netware server makes it suitable for both small and large departments. There are three main versions of netware suited to the University environment. These are Advanced Netware, SFT Netware, and Netware 386. A Netware server uses its own disk format and access scheme optimised for multiple users (unlike MS-DOS). While it is possible to share a 286 or 386 based PC with DOS and a Netware server, it is not recommended, a reliable netware server should be a dedicated PC. Netware supports many cabling schemes including Ethernet, TokenRing, and LocalTalk. Advanced Netware allows up to 100 concurrent users, be they MS-DOS, Macintosh, or OS/2. All Netware servers from Advanced Netware and above include system reliability features such as an active disk correction scheme and UPS (uninteruptible power supply) monitoring. SFT Netware offers the same features as Advanced Netware as well as a database transaction processing scheme. This scheme is supported by several PC database products. SFT Netware can also handle both Disk Mirroring and Disk Duplexing for environments requiring extreme reliability. Netware 386 is the most highly recommended version of Netware due to its future support and third party enhancements. It offers larger volume sizes, increased concurrent users (250 users) and larger file sizes (4G). It also permits Workgroup managers in addition to the Supervisor. All Netware versions provide excellent security features including the ability to prevent software copying - particularly important in a student environment. Netware can run on most 286 or 386 based PC's and requires 4 Megabytes of memory. Pricing / Ordering * Manuals must be ordered separately they are required for any installation not already using a similar Netware server * Please specify 3.5" disks or 5.25" disks.
