[comp.sys.novell] Novell 386 or 3+ OPEN

brinich@keinstr.UUCP (Mark Brinich) (03/02/91)

I realize that this isn't the most objective group of people to be asking this
question, but I'll ask it anyway. We're in the process of upgrading our PC
LAN here, and the question is should we go to 3+ OPEN(we're using 3+ Share now)
or bite the bullet and go to Netware 386. I personally don't care which way
we go, but I would like to make an intelligent choice. So it really boils down to this:

does LAN Manager(which is really the same as 3+ OPEN) have any obvious plusses
over Novell 386(or vice versa for that matter)?

A couple other questions:

1) is 386 Netware really as easy to gen as they say it is(doing a 2.15 SFT was
a real pain as I recall).

2) any experience with the ProComp disk controller, or recommendations for
other disk controllers? For that matter any recommendations on PC servers?

I don't know about you, but I managed to gen the nw386 server under 2 hours
(my seagate wren v was netware ready so I didn't have to compsurf it).

procomp DCB is nice, there are a few around here. What makes this DCB
really nice is that it will mark your drives as netware ready without
compsurf-ing them, which is sorta bad, but if you're in a rush and really
don't care that your drives will fail sometime soon, its a nice feature.

<asks about Netware 386 vs. 3+Open>

The gen for NW 386 took about 15 minutes on our net. You don't
mention size or use of your net but in many situations it
appears to be pretty even between the two network operating
systems. Netware gets good support from applications programmers
but if you know that all your apps will run under LAN Manager,
who cares. Adequate tape backup has been an issue for each
system but more Netware Loadable Modules are coming out for
NW 386. Can't speak for LM in this regard but I'm sure other
people will comment.
