[comp.sys.novell] general info

i'm a new sys-admin for a novell net with about 23 boxes and 6-8 printers
floating around. our old admin was pretty screwed, and there's not much
record-keeping been done. i'm in sore need of some advice, and was hoping
you good folk could help me. trust that i'll become an avid reader.

several questions:
1) is there a list of standard/dumb questions typically asked, and their
answers? if there is, i'd appreciate a copy.

2) looking for news/bbs style software for a Novell/token-ring.

3) looking for Mail on same.

4) saw mention of "remote printers". I've got a couple of really good
printers around, that need to stay where they are. I would really
like to be able to print to them from the network. any suggestions?

5) anyone ever heard of AGA/Discus optical drives? if so, i'm looking for
either them, or someone who took over tech-support, or just someone
who knows a lot about them.

Thanks much, netland. be seeing you around.

Don't know of any.

ditto. Although someone out there has some weird NNTP version of news for
PC in alpha/beta. Not very good but functional to a degree.

Look for commercial products. cc:Mail is extremely popular although with
the recent buyout from Lotus, it really depends on how you feel about
future customer service from Lotus/cc:Mail. A recent plus from this and
another news item is that cc:Mail will be integrated into Notes and that
Powercore's Network Scheduler II will be seemlily integrated into cc:Mail
(for workgroup scheduling software, due out in late summer). Notes looks
like it has possibilities to create a base to write a Notes-based news
software program that uses NNTP. If you're looking for something that's
easy to administer, DaVinci email is a nice package.

We're currently using LanSpool on our NW286 v2.15c LAN and it works. I'd
probably go with Fresh Tech's PrinterAssist now, and we're going to pick it
up for the new NW386 LAN we're working on. It seems that the RPRINTER
program (from Novell) is really slow if there is more than one printer
attached (I currently have 3 printers attached to one remote print machine),
with someone saying that it gets about a page a minute on 2 HP Laserjet II.
If it's only one printer connected to one machine, RPRINTER would be the
cheapest and best solution.

sorry, don't know.
