I have just inherited control of a small Novell net here in Toronto. It is connected by an dedicated external x.25 bridge by Datapac to a similar LAN in Ottawa. They want to take this line away, as it is quite expensive (about $600 per month plus packet charges). What I would like to know is... It is relatively easy to replace the x.25 line with dialup modems? Will people have to manually dial the modems to connect to the remotes system and will it drop the connection if noone is using it? Also, can the modems be used as regular dial-out modems when not being used as a bridge? Further still, could these same modems, when not being used as a bridge or dial out, be used as dial-in modems? What software has anyone used for this? I would like to hear from people using modems set up in various ways? What modems do you recommend? (I am preferential toward Telebit but how does Novell like half-duplex?) What are my options? I would like to have all of these features with minimum modems :-). Taking away the x.25 will leave a ibm model 30 286 at each end (toronto and ottawa) available for use in any forthcoming solution. Thanks in advance for any help, scott -- Scott J.M.
