We are in the process of installing several Novell servers, using both Netware 2.2 and 3.x, on our campuses. For large numbers of users, Novell will be the point of entry to the University's computer services which include e-mail, University library catalogues, desktop computer application and file serving, and terminal emulator service for access to our mainframes. Our users will probably be of two types: users who log onto generic accounts (e.g. STUDENT or WP), and users who have personal accounts. The Macintosh is such a liberal, friendly machine, that we expect problems in constraining it when we try to provide services to large numbers of user. We would like our Mac users to be presented with an open home folder when they log onto Novell, and not have to work their way down through several layers of folders. Can we put commonly used applications such as e-mail interfaces, terminal emulators, word processors, etc in folders *easily* accessible by all? Our impression is that HyperCard is not a suitable vehicle as an interface to Novell because many of our users will have 1Meg Macs, and so can't fire up spawned applications. Am I wrong? How do other sites deal with this problem? Has someone written a book? I would appreciate your comments.
