A while back I posted about a low percentage of disk requests being serviced from cache in Netware 2.2 on my server even though I had plenty of memory and statistics I was able to gather with monitrix about cache usage showed that cache was being utilized about 98% during the day, despite FCONSOLEs statistics. Well, I re-configured my OS and dropped the number of communication buffers from 300 to 100. This freed up about 200 some odd extra cache buffers (I am not up to 1368, with 9 FSPs, and plenty of memory in all for areas). FCONSOLE showed cache as being utilized at about 98%. I was very happy. This morning I came in and it is down again to 86%. What I think is happening is that during the night my tape backup comes on and backs up the server so fast that it cannot process the requests from cache, nor should it. But it is trying to and therefore throws off the FCONSOLE statistics. Can anyone substantiate this guess? I have a Maynard 1300 Dat that backs up about 3/4 megs per minute. My server is substantially under-utilized at this point (which is what I wanted after my upgrade) so I have a feeling that those full backups each night are a substantial percentage of disk activity in comparison to what goes on during the day.
