I received a number of responses to my request about the choice
between Netware 2.2 and 2.15 and the ability to run Windows on a
non-dedicated server. More responses went to the newsgroup than came
to me directly, but the gist of the comments were the same. I am
sorry about the small brushfire that got started, but that's life on
the internet. So, Herewith are the results.
A) EVERYONE recommended 2.2 over 2.15. There were no war stories
about 2.2, but it has been out only a short while. The
packaging, both in terms of pricing and installation, were the
most mentioned strengths. In short, 2.2 is NOT the bleeding edge
and the best route for my situation.
B) FAQ#127b. Dedicated servers are ALWAYS better than
non-dedicated. Life doesn't always give us choice here.
c) On a non-dedicated Novell server, Windows can only run in
REAL mode, which means why bother? In my particular case it
means I CANNOT run the app in question(OMNIS 5) and so I am
going to recommend a dedicated server, or, if they can't afford
that, to realign their planned usage for the machines to
activities that do have a chance to run on a non-dedicated
server.
Thanks to one and all for the help.
