We have a network which has been running V2.11 on a 286 for a couple of years. A few new users brought the total number to 35 or so, and the network started to bog. We decided to get it a 386 (a Club) and some more ram to try to speed it up a bit. We made the switch, and noticed immediately that any sustained traffic brought it completely to it's knees. With only 1 workstation on the net, trying to copy a 5 meg file from it to the server would eventually produce a NETWORK SENDING error, and everything would stop. We swapped disks, controllers, net cards, display boards and drivers for all- to no avail. The 286 box (an ACER) with any of the above hardware was fine. An older Club 386 failed, as did an ALR 486. We then installed V2.12 (running on the older Club) on the new one, and everything ran great. 2.12 ran all hardware on all machines without a hitch. Is running 2.11 on a 386 a known problem? Is there a fix less financially painful than an upgrade to 2.2? I'm a bit new at all this, so any help appreciated. --dave dcox@ucsd.edu
