[comp.sys.novell] AppleShare

tony@scotty.dccs.upenn.edu (Anthony Olejnik) (05/16/91)

There's a group here on campus that is in the process of putting together
an AppleTalk network. They have hired a consultant who has a background
with Novell's Network (and is a Novell VAR).

He is suggesting to use Netware and Mac VAP/NLM instead of Apple's
AppleShare file server software. From what I understand, Mac VAP is
used with Netware 286 while Mac NLM is used with Netware 386.

The consultant has indicated to me that Netware is a better performer
and has increased security features than Apple's AppleShare file server.

QUESTION: Is the consultant correct? is a Network server running
Mac VAP/NLM (on an 80x86 system) better than AppleShare
           file server (on a Mac)?

Any help would be *GREATLY* appreciated.

Thanks.

There is a very good article in _MACUSER_ June 1991 discussing
this exact topic.

FYI, "If you need excellent security features while you share files with
DOS or OS/2 clients and you want solid Mac performance--especially for
database purposes--consider Novell's Netware for Macintosh...you should
seriously consider Netware if you're looking for performance at any cost."

Actually, this article in MacUser only covers Netware for Macintosh for
Netware 286 products. The NLM for Netware 3.11 is not mentioned, so
expect the performance advantage of Netware over Appleshare to widen
even further.

BTW -- Has anyone seen a full evaluation (not preview) of Netware for Macintosh
NLM? We've had it for several weeks and has performed beautifully, but I
was wondering what others think...
