We are planning to install a Novell Net with approx. 50 Workstaions. My experience is limited to Nets with about 8 Workstations. I need some suggestions about the kind of Server (Ram, Disk-Space) we will need, the Netware Version and so on. (should there be a 2'nd, 3'rd ... Server) Any hints are welcome. It all depends on what kind of usage you expect. I've set up a network
for about 80 users, running SFT 286 on a 386/20 with 300M of disk space
and 4M of RAM. They mostly use it for loading WordPerfect and Symphony and
storing their files. The only part of the network that proved inadequate
was the hard drive space.
On the other hand, I've seen a network of about 20 users running V3.00
on a 386/25 server with 8M of RAM that was dreadfully slow. The users
were running a customer support centre, where every incoming call was
logged in a database.
So there is no one system that is "just right" for all 50-user LANs.
If your users will just be using it to save documents and spreadsheets,
you can probably get away with NetWare 2.2 on a 386/25 with 4-6M of RAM.
Disk space? That's a bit tougher, since you'll have to estimate how
much stuff each user is going to store. Once you've figured that out,
it's probably a good idea to double it, because you'll usually under-
estimate. On the other hand, if your users will use the network more,
you'll probably want a faster server with more RAM and NetWare 3.11.
