[comp.sys.novell] Q-- Ethernet interface for HP Laserjet

camargo@cs.columbia.edu (Kiko) (05/09/91)

Hi there,

I remember having read, sometime ago, about a product that allows an
HP Laserjet III printer to be attached directly to the ethernet, without
the need of a printer server. But I can't remeber where I saw the ad.
Was I dreaming ? If not, does anybody know what product will do this,
and also work on Netware 3.11 ?

Thanks,

/Kiko

The Intel NetPort will do this. It works great! I have several of them and
have had only one problem in over 6 months of use. The problem was corrected
with a simple reset command.

MUCH faster than the NOVELL 2.15c Print Server and Remote Print Server and
MUCH more reliable IMHO. Can only _assume_ it will also work with NOVELL 3.x

See INFOWORLD July 30, 1990: page 72 for a review.
Call Intel, 1-800-538-3373 for the details.

Opps! The Intel Netport still requires you to set it up using PCONSOLE.
I'm not sure if it actually uses the Novell Print Server or what, but I don't
have to have the Print Server VAP running. I have one HP Series III which
still uses the Novell Remote Print Server Software. The last time the server
went down (power outage) the Intel NetPorts came back up by themselves while
the Novell Print Server did not. I was still able to use the NetPorts but
not the other, until I interveined!

Intel Netports not only work with Netware 386, our tests show that it
is *faster* than printing to a local printer! Love to know how they
pulled *that* off...

We have something even faster - a Castelle LANpress - and four ports
instead of 2, better NetWare queue support (multi servers, multi queues,
the same kind of peer-to-peer printer status monitoring and control
you get from PSERVER), and unencrypted password support - none of which
you get from a Netport.

Just saw a benchmark on printing a page with a lot of graphics on an LJ2
at the parallel port. The time from the light coming on to the drum motor
starting was 3:00 for the Netport, 1:17 for the FAXpress.

Also saw Castelle just announced 10BaseT and 16 Mbit Token Ring models,
too (we run thin Ethernet).

Since Novell uses drive F: through Z:, I can't use my local drive F: and
G: whenever I log into the network. Is there anyway that I can use
these "lost" local drive? Thank you for your reply!

Try setting the last drive in config.sys to f:. Novell assumes the
last drive is e:. (Actually , I think DOS makes that assumption and
tells Novell...)
