[The following summary has been provided by the people associated with the Japan Program at NSF. One potentially relevant piece of additional information: at the current time, only US citizens, nationals, or permanent residents are eligible. -- Rick] NSF's support for research stays in Japan The National Science Foundation (NSF) provides support to U.S. scientists and engineers for research cooperation with Japan, as described in our "Japan Program Announcement" (NSF 90-144). NSF supports a wide range of activities designed to promote research cooperation with Japanese scientists and engineers: research stays in Japan of up to two years, short-term visits for collaborative research, bilateral seminars, state-of-the-art reviews, and preparatory Japanese language study in the United States. Support is available to researchers of all levels for collaboration with any sector of the Japanese science and engineering community--governmen- tal, academic, or industrial. Our support covers costs such as travel and subsistence. We particularly encourage research stays of six months or longer in Japanese laboratories. You, the researcher, must take the initiative to identify an appropriate Japanese host. Inside the back cover of the announcement, we list 110 laboratories run by Japanese government agencies, public corporations, and non-profit organizations. Further information on each lab is available from us. A long-term research stay in Japan requires careful preparation. Potential applicants should begin planning their stay about one year in advance, to allow time for NSF's regular merit review, formal approval from the Japanese host agency, and for obtaining an appropriate Japanese visa. At present, sufficient funds are available to support all meritorious proposals for long-term research stays in Japan. We would greatly appreciate your assistance in publicizing these opportunities to other researchers who might be interested. If you or they have inquiries about the terms of NSF's support or need additional information about potential Japanese hosts, please contact our Japan Program, by e-mail at NSFJinfo@nsf.gov, or by phone at (202) 357-9558.
